Nomugisha on her passion for sexual reproductive health and rights

22-year-old Hellen Nomugisha is the president of African Youth and Adolescent Network on Population and Development (AFIYAN), Rwandan Chapter, a network that brings together all-youth led organisations to implement focus areas like demographic dividend, entrepreneurship, gender-based violence, and forced marriages, among other things.

She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in public health. She spoke to Women Today’s Sharon Kantengwa about her passion for sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Belgium is joining forces with UNICEF and UNFPA in Benin to tackle child marriage and sexual exploitation

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo today signed two programmes in Benin, related to the promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Belgium will be cooperating with UNICEF to help combat child marriages. With the support of our country, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will be setting up an information project aimed at young people and women, covering sexual education and sexual violence.

Indonesian women's group issues edict against child marriage

Indonesia's main Muslim women's group has issued an edict against child marriage, urging the government of the world's most populous Muslim nation to increase the legal minimum age for females to marry from 16 to 18 years, the group said Friday.

The Congress of Indonesian Women Ulema said the religious edict, or fatwa, was decided at a three-day meeting that ended Thursday in the West Java town of Cirebon.

The fatwa, which has no legal force but is influential, urges the government to amend a 1974 Law on Marriage to raise the minimum marriage age.

Too early, too many

“I work but the income I make is not enough to take care of my family,” says 20-year-old Salamatu Abubakar.

Although not married, Salamatu is a mother of three children. At age 17, she was already a mother of a set of twin boys, two years later, she got pregnant again and gave birth to a baby girl but says she did not plan for both pregnancies.

“I already come from a big family and it is difficult for us to survive, so I did not want to be in such a situation like my mother but it just happened,” she explains.

PPAL Launches Youth Family Planning Awareness For Grand Bassa County

Buchanan, Grand Bassa County – The Planned Parenthood Association of Liberia (PPAL) on May 17 launched a community engagement for youth family planning Program in the port city of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

The colorful program which brought together students, youth groups and community members was held at the newly constructed Buchanan Hotel.

The project is sponsor by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and targets youth between ages 11 to 24 years.

U.S. to Provide Family Planning for Adolescents

The US government intends to dedicate a portion of its Shs 1.7 trillion health budget on providing family planning services to adolescents and women, but admits it is facing challenges getting Ugandan authorities to buy into the idea.

The USAID Mission director in Uganda, Mark Meassick, told journalists at the US mission on Wednesday that they will give special focus on family planning and reproductive health, through providing crucial, age-appropriate information to adolescents.
