Sweden will increase spending on contraceptives from its 2010 level of US $32 million per year to $40 million per year, totaling an additional $40 million between 2011 and 2015. The government plans to increase its contribution to MDG 4 and 5 from its current amount of $450 million per year.

  • Sweden’s funding for maternal and child health (MDG 4 & 5) is listed in table 2 below; disbursements for 2010-2013 and budgeted funding for 2014-2015.
    • Disbursements increased by 22 percent from US $333 million in 2010 to US $405 million in 2013 for funding towards MDG 4 and 5.
    • The table also breaks down expenditures into multilateral and bilateral funding; bilateral funding accounted for 36% of all MNCH expenditures in 2013.
    • As listed in the table 2, the Swedish government will increase funding for MDG 4 & 5 to US $451 million in 2014. Funding will remain at this level in 2015.

  • In terms of key funding areas, no major shifts in resource allocation to RMNCH are presently expected; the focus will remain on SRHR and MDG 4 & 5. Funding levels will likely also remain stable.

Sweden's priority is to work in the most effective way for the rights and improved health of women and girls in the most vulnerable countries in Africa. The Swedish government will continue to be a major player, both financially and politically, in the issue of family planning. Sweden also commits to ensuring that support of family planning utilizes existing structures for financing and support, and is contributing to the broader agenda of MDGs 4 and 5.
