• The Hewlett Foundation also supported the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) to help explain the concept "unmet need." PRB produced a video that illustrates how unmet need is a dynamic concept, and that women can have unmet need at different points in their lives for different reasons. PRB also produced accompanying report and policy brief.

In July 2016, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation shared an update on progress in achieving its Family Planning 2020 commitment.

• The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is committed to maintaining current funding levels of approximately $22 million annually to international family planning and reproductive health until 2020, of which $13 million will support a combination of direct service provision and advocacy specifically related to family planning.
• In 2015, roughly $13 million was dedicated to support family planning service provision and advocacy, and approximately $18 million will be dedicated for the same in 2016.
• The Foundation’s support for family planning activities is expected to fluctuate year to year, but will be maintained at $13 million per year or above through 2020. 

In August 2015, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation shared an update on progress in achieving its commitments to FP2020.

• Exploring an External Accountability Mechanism: As reported in our FP2020 update last year, the Hewlett Foundation provided support in 2012 to Results for Development (R4D) to develop options for civil society-led accountability mechanisms to ensure follow through on the commitments made at the London Summit. Based on research into accountability mechanisms in other sectors and on consultations with a wide range of stakeholders in the family planning and reproductive health field, in May 2014 R4D produced the report Accelerating Progress in Family Planning: Options for Strengthening CSO-led Monitoring and Accountability. R4D is currently engaged in dissemination efforts to share these options with organizations interested in accountability work and with potential donors.  The Hewlett Foundation currently does not have plans to support any of the options described in the report.
• Engagement in Francophone West Africa and the Ouagadougou Partnership: Hewlett made approximately $4.75 million and $3 million in grants in 2014 and 2015 respectively to support activities in Francophone West Africa aligned with the goals of the Ouagadougou Partnership and priorities in the country costed implementation plans.

   

  Highlights of grants made in 2014 and 2015 in Francophone West Africa include significantly increasing the Foundation’s support (along with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to the Ouagadougou Partnership Coordination Unit; providing a large, flexible grant to Marie Stopes International for developing an organizational strategy for the Sahel and testing different approaches for regional procurement and operational models; renewing support to Hope Consulting to incorporate results from the 2013 market segmentation analysis into Ministry of Health and family planning partner programming; renewing support to IntraHealth International for family planning advocacy coalitions in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal; and funding World Faiths Development Dialogue to engage high-level faith leaders in Senegal in dialogue with the government about how to support implementation of that country’s costed implementation plan.

  In September 2015 the Hewlett Foundation plans to launch a formative evaluation of our strategy for family planning and reproductive health in Francophone West Africa. The evaluation will assess the Foundation’s strategy to serve as a catalyst in the region to spur an increase in access and use of family planning and reproductive health services, both through grantmaking and active participation as a core donor of the Ouagadougou Partnership.
