Join FP2020 by Making a Commitment

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Global shared the following update on progress in achieving its FP2020 commitments:

• In 2014, in fulfillment of its FP2020 commitment to each 2 million more women in the United States with lifesaving care, Planned Parenthood expanded our reach—and deepened our impact—providing the health care and education that help millions of people pursue their dreams and realize their full potential, and advocating for full access and equity in reproductive health care. Planned Parenthood’s approximately 700 health centers across the U.S. saw nearly three million patients this year alone. In 2014, we also reached 1.5 million young people and families with in-person sex education. We worked with 33 affiliates to improve patient health care—from screening for chlamydia and cervical cancer to increasing access to effective methods of contraception. This year, Planned Parenthood health centers provided over 487,000 breast exams to our patients around the country. We also launched Online Appointment Scheduling, enabling patients to schedule their appointments any time, day or night. 20,000 appointments were scheduled at 48 health centers this year alone, with more affiliates participating in the year to come. Our educators trained over 18,000 teachers, school staff, and other youth-serving professionals within their communities. And we organized the largest Affordable Care Act canvass enrollment effort in the U.S. Because of our efforts, people across the U.S. got health coverage—many for the first time.
• This past year, working with our affiliates across the United States in fulfillment of our FP2020 commitment, we strengthened the operations of 35 affiliates—leading to a 25% increase in productivity and better health access. We opened more than 10 new health centers across the U.S.—from Tacoma, WA, to Columbus, OH, to Fayetteville, NC. We completed or are making significant progress on health centers in Dallas, Asheville, San Antonio, Miami, Louisville, and New Orleans, all of which will expand access helps patients in underserved communities and help them get the health care they need. Our “Planned Parenthood Without Walls” pilot in Mississippi received an award for bringing care to new communities. We also facilitated $5.1 million in grants to 24 affiliates; saw $14.8 million in Justice Funds go to 80,000 women in 42 states; and successfully defeated TRAP laws in 8 states.

Planned Parenthood Global supports our partners to:

• Provide tens of thousands of women, men, and young people with sexual and reproductive health education;
• Provide contraceptives;
• Increase access to treatment for complications from unsafe abortion;
• Increase access to safe abortion care, where legal;
• And expand laws and policies promoting women’s health in Africa and Latin America.

Since 2012, in fulfillment of our FP2020 commitment, Planned Parenthood Global through our 52 in-country partners in Africa and Latin America reached a total of 2.05 million people, including 1.17 million youth. Clients received general sexual and reproductive health care and information, including contraception services and STI information, as well as safe abortion and post abortion care.

• Our unique sustainability model sets up apart, as we empower partners to stand on their own. We help grassroots organizations develop solid reproductive health programs, identify other sources of funding, build their communications and advocacy skills, and develop strategic plans. Our model ProCapacity assesses a partner’s programmatic, financial, and organizational sustainability models, and delivers specific, tailored opportunities so we can address inconsistencies.
• Through our new Voices for Health project, we are supporting advocates in four countries to build strong coalitions to fight for access to family planning---especially for young women who face some of the greatest obstacles to health and rights. This is our partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies. In Burkina, Senegal and Uganda we are focused on improving young women’s access to family planning and in Nicaragua we are supporting work to improve public opinion around safe abortion. In Nigeria and Ecuador, we are piloting our Global Mobile program that will use cell phones to bring sexual and reproductive health information to young people and adolescents, as well as connect them to service providers, through our Global Mobile program, a partnership with UNFPA.
• Planned Parenthood Global partners in Africa and Latin America provided sexual and reproductive health care and information to 1.17 million youth from 2012-2014—and those numbers are increasing. We shape our programs to speak to young people and really create positive changes in their lives. Our health care and information is disseminated in some of the most innovative ways in the field of sexual and reproductive health: through social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram; radio shows; television; mobile services, and peer-to-peer programs - all in various languages. In addition, Planned Parenthood has one of the most comprehensive sexual health education websites in existence today: our Spanish site gets 10 million visitors a year from Latin America alone. Earlier this year, we were proud to announce the launch of Healthiest Generation, a new digital platform to share stories of sexual health and reproductive rights from around the world, with a focus on young people. There, we feature original content like playlists from countries across Africa and Latin America; stories of changemakers from around the world; photos, videos and GIFs illuminating the front lines of this work; and much more.
